INTRODUCTION TO
OHIO CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SCHOOL
1994, 8, 30
Ohio Contemporary Chinese
School (OCCS) is a non-profit organization without political affiliation, which is under
the supervision of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at The Ohio State
University. It wasestablished in August 6, 1994 to satisfy an increasing
demand for learning Chinese language and culture in the greater Columbus area. The
establishment of OCCS fills an urgent need for communication between Amrica and China, as
China intensifies its transformation from a planned to a market economy, and opens up to
the world economy. For America, China is a huge market, but, a market share depends on
communication and understanding between the two countries. OCCS will provide a place
for the next generation to learn contemporary Chinese language and culture.
Through the great efforts of all our volunteers, OCCS is ready to begin classes in the
Fall quarter, 1994. The School will be located at Drake Union of the Ohio State
University. There are more than 60 students and 9 teachers at this point. The
opening ceremony will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on September 11, 1994.
The mission of the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School is to foster the learning of Chinese
language and culture, with emphasis on simplified Chinese characters and Chinese pin-yin
romanization. It is open not only to the children of Chinese families, but also to the
children of other nationalities.
Morover, the School hopes to develop in the area of adult education in the future. The
curriculum for the coming quarter will be Chinese language courses at various levels--from
kindergarten to senior high, and courses of Chinese music, traditional Chinese painting
and martial arts. Other courses such as the application of Chinese word-processing,
storytelling, soccer, baseball, and calligraphy will be offered in the future.
